AI Boyfriend Apps: A Practical Comparison Checklist
Compare male AI companions using a repeatable conversation trial, character controls, billing checks and privacy questions. No invented test scores.

An AI boyfriend app should fit the character and conversation you want. A convincing portrait is only one part of that decision: the writing, correction controls, account settings and subscription terms matter after the first session.
This guide gives adults a way to compare male companions without treating a provider's marketing as a measured result. It does not rank emotional intelligence or establish which app has the best memory.
Correction, September 20, 2026: The previous version claimed weeks of hands-on testing, market-growth percentages and demographic estimates without supporting records. Those claims and the illustrative growth chart have been removed. This replacement is a proposed evaluation method, not a report of tests performed by Lewdly.
Start With The Character You Want
Write a short character brief before opening several services. Decide whether the companion should be reserved or talkative, whether you want an ongoing fictional setting, and which topics should stay outside the conversation. Use an invented adult character rather than copying a real person's private information.
A brief might describe an adult museum guide who enjoys architecture, answers concisely and asks one question at a time. That is a sample character design, not a profile reported from any service. Keep the same brief when comparing apps so that you are not comparing an elaborate setup in one with a default character in another.
Check what you can actually edit. A portrait selector, written backstory and stored conversation memory are different controls. Changing the portrait may not change how the character talks. A service may also restrict which controls are available under the current plan.
Two Providers To Investigate
The following are starting points based on public provider descriptions checked September 20, 2026. They are not a complete market survey or a recommendation based on firsthand trials.
| Provider | What its own site describes | What to check yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Nomi | Boyfriend companions, custom backstories and voice conversations | Available male characters, editable traits and the allowance for your preferred interaction |
| Replika | A customizable companion with calls and remembered conversation context | Current male presentation choices, relationship settings and which features your plan includes |
These descriptions do not prove reliable recall or establish that either app responds in a way you will enjoy. Open the current signup and plan screens before paying. Record the product version or date: controls and offers can change.
Run A Small Conversation Trial
Use low-stakes fictional details for the trial. A useful comparison does not require uploading personal messages, identifying photographs or private details about someone else.
| Step | Example task | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Establish tone | Ask the character to answer briefly and avoid pet names | Whether later replies maintain that preference |
| Add a fictional fact | Say the character's museum closes on Tuesdays | Whether it is recalled accurately later |
| Correct a fact | Change the closing day to Mondays | Whether the old detail keeps returning |
| Set a boundary | Ask to leave a topic and talk about architecture | Whether the topic changes without repeated pressure |
| Resume later | Return after closing the app | Which details remain and whether the app invents a past exchange |
Run each task more than once if it matters to your choice. Record the prompt, response and settings. One pleasing exchange is evidence of that exchange, not a general reliability score. Similarly, one failure can be useful for your decision without proving that everyone will see it.
Separate controllable problems from preferences. If the response is too long, try the available length or character settings. If the app repeatedly ignores a clear boundary, further customization may not be worth your time. There is no obligation to keep using an app because you have already spent time building a character.
Check Costs Before Building A Long History
Write down the amount due now, billing interval, renewal price and cancellation route. Compare the features you need rather than a headline starting price. Voice, image requests and extra characters may be accounted for differently; verify the current offer instead of assuming one subscription covers every action.
For a trial, choose a spending limit and a date to review the service. Save the receipt and relevant plan description. Check whether cancellation stops renewal, removes access immediately or leaves access until the end of the paid period. Do not infer those details from a review of another app.
Treat Privacy As A Separate Decision
A warm conversational style is not evidence of confidential handling. Check collection, provider access, service providers, retention and deletion in the current policy. Replika's privacy policy, for example, describes third-party AI processing and encryption during transmission; that is not a promise of end-to-end encrypted conversations.
Use account controls and device security, but avoid sharing material you would be uncomfortable having processed by the service. A screen name does not erase account, payment or device records. Keep real people's private information out of a fictional character setup.
Make The Choice From Your Record
After the trial, list the two or three things that mattered most: character control, acceptable replies, cost or account management. Keep the actual examples beside that list. Choose only if the service meets your requirements at a price you understand. If none does, waiting or choosing another form of entertainment is a valid result.
Lewdly publishes this guide as an AI product provider. The examples are editorial exercises, and the linked services have not been independently scored here. For a broader feature and purchase worksheet, see the virtual companion comparison guide.
