What This Covers
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep, and hands back on your next visit. It is how a site remembers that you are signed in rather than asking on every page.
This policy covers cookies and the other storage a browser offers, including local storage and session storage, which do similar jobs by different means. It applies to the Lewdly website and the app. Our Privacy Policy covers what we do with data once we have it.
The Three Categories We Use
Everything we set falls into one of three groups. Only the first is required for the platform to work.
- Essential. Needed for the site to function. These cannot be switched off, and there is no consent to give because the site cannot run without them.
- Functional. Remember your preferences so you do not have to set them again.
- Analytics. Tell us in aggregate how the product is used. These are optional and are set only if you agree.
Essential Cookies
These keep you signed in, keep your session attached to the right account, protect forms against cross-site request forgery, and spread traffic across our servers. One of them records the cookie choice you made, which is slightly ironic but unavoidable, because without it we would have to ask you again on every page.
Session cookies in this group are deleted when you close the browser. The sign-in cookie lasts until you sign out or it expires.
Functional Cookies
These remember settings so the product behaves the way you left it. They hold your language, your theme, your content visibility preferences, and whether you have dismissed a particular notice.
Blocking these does not break the platform. It just means it forgets your preferences and you reset them each visit.
Analytics Cookies
Analytics tells us which pages people actually read and where the product confuses them. We use a self-hosted analytics tool served from our own domain, which keeps that data with us rather than a third party, and we also use Google Analytics on the marketing site.
Google Analytics is a third-party service and it sets its own cookies. These are optional. If you decline them we do not set them, and the only cost is that our view of how the site is used gets less accurate.
Attribution Cookies
When you arrive from a link, we record which link it was in a first-party cookie scoped to our domain, so that it survives the move from the marketing site to the app. It stores the referring source and campaign, and nothing about you personally.
This exists so affiliates and creators get paid for referrals they genuinely made. It sits in the functional group because the platform works without it, and it expires after a limited window rather than following you indefinitely.
Third-Party Cookies
Some cookies are set by services embedded in our pages rather than by us. Where that happens the provider sets its own cookie under its own policy and we do not control it.
We do not run third-party advertising or retargeting cookies on Lewdly, and we do not allow ad networks to build profiles from your activity here.
How to Control Cookies
You have three routes, and they work at different levels.
- Our cookie banner. Accept or decline the optional categories when you first arrive, and change your mind later from the same control.
- Your browser settings. Every major browser can block or delete cookies, per site or across the board. Look for privacy or content settings.
- Private browsing. Discards everything at the end of the session, which also means you sign in again each time.
What Happens If You Block Everything
Blocking optional cookies is fine and the platform works normally. Blocking essential cookies is not, because sign-in stops working. You will not be able to hold a session, so you will not be able to reach your account.
Other Storage on Your Device
We use local storage and session storage for things a cookie handles badly, such as caching part of the interface, holding a draft prompt so a refresh does not lose it, and mirroring a preference where a cookie may be dropped. Clearing site data in your browser removes all of it.
